St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, hosting anywhere from zero to four ships on a given day. That swing matters more than most visitors realize — the difference between a quiet morning at Magens Bay and a beach packed with a few thousand extra people usually comes down to which day of the week it is. This guide breaks down the actual ship schedule, what to expect at the two St. Thomas docks, and how to plan your beach days around the crowds instead of into them.

02 · Arriving by Cruise Ship: The Two Marinas
St. Thomas cruise ships dock at one of two marinas in Charlotte Amalie — Crown Bay or Havensight (West Indian Company Dock, or "WICO"). Occasionally ships anchor directly in the harbor and tender passengers to shore instead.
Havensight (WICO)
Havensight is the busier of the two docks and can host up to three ships at once. Right off the pier is Havensight Mall, a large open-air complex with duty-free shops — jewelry, liquor, watches, and souvenirs, including well-known names like Little Switzerland and Diamonds International. For food, you'll find The Tap & Still (with its own onsite brewery), Stir It Up coffee shop, Beni Iguana's Sushi Bar, Virgin's Haven, The Smoking Rooster BBQ, and the long-running Delly Deck diner right in the mall. The adjacent Yacht Haven Grande marina adds a more upscale shopping and dining strip. The Skyride to Paradise Point — a gondola with sweeping harbor views — is also right across the street along with Dog House Pub, Cravin' Crabs, The Island Green, Pizza Amore and Leatherback Brewing. Downtown Charlotte Amalie is about a 20-minute walk along the waterfront.
Crown Bay
Crown Bay sits about 1.6 miles west of downtown and is smaller, with room for up to two ships. Crown Bay is a deeper marina so larger ships like Royal Caribbean's Oasis and Icon class ships park here. It sees less overall traffic than Havensight, though a full ship at the dock can still make the terminal feel busy. There's a mix of shops and food vendors right in the complex, and the ferry to Water Island is just a 5-minute walk outside the terminal. Newly opened La Marina, in the spot where Tickle's Dockside Pub used to be, is a great sit-down restaurant to enjoy a bite and a view of the harbor. Crown Bay tends to be the quieter, less overwhelming arrival experience of the two docks.
Local tip: Both docks have official, clearly posted taxi fares — no need to negotiate or haggle. Rental car counters are also available at both terminals if you'd rather explore on your own schedule.
03 · How to Read the Schedule for Crowd Planning
A simple rule of thumb: the more ships in port and the higher the combined passenger count, the busier beaches, shared excursions, and downtown shopping will be — especially between 10 AM and 2 PM, when most excursions and beach shuttles are running. Days with 🚢 in the schedule above are your heads-up to either plan around the crowds or embrace the energy, depending on what you're after.
Quiet days — usually Sundays and scattered weekdays with just one small ship or none at all — are your best bet for a peaceful beach day, especially at the spots most popular with cruise excursions.
04 · Beaches That Get Crowded on Ship Days
St. Thomas: Sapphire Beach, Magens Bay, Coki Beach, Lindbergh Bay
St. John: Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, Maho Bay
These are the beaches most heavily featured in shared shore excursions and easiest to reach by shuttle or safari taxi — which means they fill up fastest on high-traffic ship days.
05 · Where to Go Instead
St. Thomas: Brewers Bay, Hull Bay, Secret Harbour
St. John: Salt Pond Bay, Oppenheimer Beach, Francis Bay
These spots see far less shore-excursion traffic simply because they're not the default stops on most shared shuttle routes — same beautiful water, a fraction of the people.
