Should I rent a car or plan to taxi everywhere?
The best and most affordable way to get around in the Virgin Islands is the open-air safari buses. Although they do not venture to every destination on the island, it's an affordable way to get to many frequented locations.Â
VITran is another option for an affordable way to get around, but just like the safari buses, it doesn't go everywhere. Â
Taxis in the Virgin Islands are not metered. They charge a per-person, per-destination rate. Â Taxi rates are determined by the VI Taxicab Commission and are approved by the Virgin Islands's Legislature. Always make sure you're getting in a licensed taxi with a license plate indicating Taxi status. We also highly recommend confirming with your driver the total rate to your destination before you board, including any baggage or additional stops.Â
Public taxis (i.e.. not private) will usually wait to fill their taxi with additional passengers traveling to multiple destinations before departing. So, if you're on a tight deadline, we highly recommend requesting a private taxi, especially if you're loading up from a busy location like the airport or ferry terminal. Most taxis can fit upwards of 20 people and if they're going to be making a lot of stops, your driving time to your destination could increase significantly. If this all sounds okay to you, public taxis are your best bet.
While renting a car may not be ideal for some, if you plan to do a lot of exploring, we recommend renting a car or hiring a private car service. There is no Uber or Lyft available here, and taxis can get pricey, as they charge a per-person, each-way rate. Finding a taxi is usually pretty easy from major resorts, but if you're staying at a private villa or rental, you may find yourself giving directions to your taxi driver to pick you up or drop you off.Â

The island of Tortola has a reliable public transportation system. Most visitors choose to let taxis and buses navigate around many of the British Virgin Islands. Tortola and the surrounding islands of the BVI are best explored by boat, but if you're looking to do some exploration yourself, a rental car may be a good option for you.Â

**Please note, if you do decide to rent a car, remember to drive on the left side of the road.Â
How far in advance should I book travel, accommodations, and excursions?
For accommodations, we advise you to book as soon as you have made your decision on where to stay.Â
For air travel, prices vary greatly depending on the season, but we've found the sweet spot for best prices on air travel is around six weeks prior to departure from most US airports.Â
For excursions, we advise you to book as soon as you've decided what you want to do. Most tour providers and charter companies offer refunds if you cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Be sure to check each provider's cancellation policy at the time of booking.Â
