Hidden Beaches We Shouldn’t Tell You About
There are many beaches in the US Virgin Islands that will never make the cover of the local tourism guide. We’d like to keep them that way to preserve the charm of some of the more secluded beaches. However, if you’re willing to go off-the-beaten path for a beach experience the locals quietly enjoy, check out some of our favorite hidden gems below.
These are the places that don’t make the glossy brochures; the taxi drivers won’t take you there; you may or may not have cell phone service. They may take a little more effort to reach, but the reward is a unique Caribbean experience that feels truly untouched.
IS IT SAFE TO GO OFF THE BEATEN PATH?
Is it safe to walk the crowded streets of New York City? There’s inherent risk every where you go, but the odds of anything bad happening are just as high as getting in your car and driving to work every day. Sure, you need to be aware of your surroundings; that’s a basic rule of life. But the most important things you can do when traveling to any new place are:
- Be polite to everyone you meet.
- Treat the land with the respect it deserves… Yes, you should ALWAYS LEAVE NO TRACE!
- Be prepared: Water – check. Snacks – check. Bug Spray – check. Sunscreen – check. You get the point.
- Respect locals and their space.
- Know where you’re going… and tell someone, especially if you’re planning to go alone.
- Trust your gut. If your Spidey Senses tingle… you should probably move on.
Sure, that advice may seem like visiting these hidden gems aren’t worth it, but if you’re looking for unique experiences that you won’t find on the front page of the Welcome Magazine, we’ve got you covered.

Neltjeberg Beach
Neltjeberg Beach is a perfect crescent with nothing but golden sand and scattered palm trees. You may find a friendly local walking their dog or playing with kids. On the rare occasion, you may even spot a turtle nest. Whatever you do, do not disturb the turtle nest… or the locals, for that matter.
But if you dare to brave the trek down the bumpy road – four-wheel-drive is definitely recommended – you’ll find yourself in serene solitude at a beach even many locals haven’t been to. What you won’t find are any amenities. So, pack a cooler, bring your chairs and enjoy a beach day far away from the crowds.
Pro Tip: Book a private Jeep tour with a local guide to guarantee a seamless experience.

Mandhal Bay
Often the secret location for many late night beach bonfires. Mandahl Bay is a secluded rocky beach with views of Hans Lollick. A great place to watch a sunset, snorkel on a calm day and avoid the tourist scene.
The beach is rocky and there is tons of cool rocks and shells to explore, but remember, if you found it on the beach, it should stay on the beach. Except trash, it’s ok to take the trash. You may even find a great piece of sea glass, and that you can take with you.
Pro Tip: If you plan to get in the water at Mandahl Bay, water shoes or fins are highly recommended.
St. John
Known for its national parkland and wild terrain, St. John is a haven for secluded beach lovers. Nearly two-thirds of the island is protected, meaning countless coves remain uncrowded year-round.
Salt Pond Bay
A 10-minute hike from the road reveals a gentle, horseshoe-shaped bay with soft sand and calm waters. This beach is a favorite for snorkeling with sea turtles, and the rocky outcrops make it perfect for light adventure.
Nearby: Hike further up to Ram Head Trail for sweeping views and a rewarding post-beach trek.
Denis Bay
Accessed via a short trail from the Peace Hill Ruins, Denis Bay is easy to miss but unforgettable once found.
With views of Jost Van Dyke in the distance and soft, shady sand to relax on, it feels like your own private retreat.
Bonus Stop: On your way back, explore the Peace Hill sugar mill ruin—a peaceful and scenic detour.
St. Croix
St. Croix tends to attract a more independent crowd, and that’s reflected in its beaches. They are less built up and more accessible to those who seek them out.
Isaac Bay & Jack Bay Beaches
Accessible only via a hike from Point Udall (the easternmost point in the U.S.), these two beaches are part of a protected marine reserve.
Isaac Bay comes first, a long curve of beach perfect for snorkeling.
Jack Bay is just beyond it, smaller and even more secluded.
You’ll often share the beach with no one but hermit crabs and shorebirds.
Pack: Sturdy shoes, water, and snacks. There are no facilities, and the sun can be intense.
Cane Bay (Early or Late)
While Cane Bay is popular with divers and snorkelers, timing is key.
Arrive at dawn or an hour before sunset to have the beach largely to yourself.
The water is almost always calm, making it a perfect place for a reflective swim.
Shoy’s Beach
Hidden behind the Buccaneer Resort but open to the public, Shoy’s is one of St. Croix’s best secrets.
Accessed through a tree-lined path, this beach offers calm water, gentle waves, and picture-perfect sand.
Local Tip: It’s an ideal stop after a morning exploring Christiansted or after brunch at The Mermaid.
How to Do Hidden Beaches Right
- Leave no trace: Take your trash with you. Many of these beaches are untouched and should stay that way.
- Reef-safe sunscreen only: Protect the coral and marine life.
- Water + snacks: Few of these beaches have vendors or shops nearby.
- Timing is everything: Go early or late to maximize solitude.
- Use local guides: Charter captains and tour guides often know lesser-known spots accessible only by boat or trail.
